Practically every part of this species of tree is used by humans. Native Americans used the leaves of the tree medicinally, placing the crushed leaves on various sort of wounds. It is commonly used today as a key ingredient in root beer and it is used extensively in Cajun-creole cuisine. It is a fairly fast growing tree and you can see the growth rings easily in this form.
