This piece of Chesnutt Oak was lightly charred using the Japanese technique known as Shou sugi ban. You can still see much of the grain in this piece along with its lightly charred coloring. The piece reacts to the extreme heat of this process by cracking to some degree allowing further artistic flourish with the stitching that you can see near the bottom of this form.
